He Really Has a Problem With That Skirt

Dylan has opinions about Her skirt.

A lot of opinions.

“You planning to wear that ugly skirt forever?”

H, naturally, refuses to cooperate.

“It’s not ugly. It’s the wrong season. I was in summer yesterday, you know.”

Honestly, I love that answer.

She doesn't get embarrassed.
She doesn't suddenly start wondering whether she looks good enough for him.

She simply corrects him.

The skirt isn't ugly. The season is wrong.

Of course.

And that tells you quite a lot about H.

She has already arrived in a world she doesn't understand. She's staying in the home of a man who clearly has far more money than she does. She knows they're not exactly from the same world.

And yet she doesn't seem particularly intimidated by him.

Dylan can criticize her clothes all he wants.

She's still going to defend the skirt.

I have a feeling he finds that much more entertaining than he lets on.

But then the conversation changes.

“You’re not used to asking for help, huh?”

And this is where Dylan gets interesting.

Because he doesn't respond by simply buying her an entire new wardrobe.

He doesn't hand her a credit card and say, Go crazy.

Instead, he seems to recognize the real problem.

H needs clothes.

She needs money to buy them.

And asking for help is clearly not something she finds easy.

So she finally says:

“Actually... I need money. To buy clothes.”

And then, almost immediately:

“I’ll pay you back. I won't run this time.”

That little sentence says more than she probably realizes.

She's willing to ask him for help.

But she still needs to make it clear that she will pay him back.

She isn't asking him to take care of her.

She's asking for a loan.

And Dylan lets her keep that dignity.

He doesn't turn it into a grand romantic gesture. He doesn't make her feel like she owes him something.

He just helps.

Maybe that's one of the things I like about this scene.

Dylan has plenty of money, but he doesn't use money to make H dependent on him.

He seems to be teaching her something much simpler:

You don't have to handle everything alone.

And somehow, H seems to understand that surprisingly quickly.

For someone who isn't used to asking anyone for help, she has already figured out exactly what she needs to ask for.

Money.

For clothes.

She'll pay him back.

She won't run.

Well...

About that last part.

Dylan remembers something H apparently hopes he has forgotten.

“You ran off last night. Came back anyway.”

And this is probably my favorite line in the whole exchange.

Because yes, she did run away.

She ran off wearing his coat.

She also happened to take the credit card from his pocket.

She even used it to check into a hotel.

And then, despite all of that, she came back.

She couldn't quite live with what she'd done.

So now she's standing in front of him, promising that this time she won't run.

And Dylan?

I can almost imagine the expression he's trying not to show.

He probably has to look serious.

He probably has to act like he's still lecturing her.

But that last sentence has a completely different feeling underneath it.

You ran.

And you came back.

There is almost a quiet little I knew you would hiding in there.

Maybe that's why Dylan doesn't seem particularly worried about her running away anymore.

Because she already tried.

And she came back.

Which, considering everything else about these two, feels strangely significant.

She doesn't know him.

Not really.

She doesn't remember the man she has known through her dreams.

She certainly doesn't know why she seems to understand him so quickly.

But somehow, even here, she is already learning how to ask him for help.

And somehow, Dylan seems to know that she will come back.

Even when she insists she won't.
