He Was Never Just the Other Man: A Different Kind of Love Triangle

In most love triangles, there's a winner, a loser, and a man readers are expected to forget.

But what if the other man was never meant to be just the loser?

What if he was someone who had been genuinely loved in another life, a real person with his own story, his own choices, and a future that didn't end with losing the woman he loved?

That's what makes The Shape of Us such an unusual love triangle.

A Love Triangle Built on Something Other Than Betrayal

This isn't a story built on betrayal, infidelity, or someone simply changing their feelings for another person.
It's about a woman who regains her memories and discovers that the life she knows isn't the only life she had.
She has been living with a borrowed identity, in a life that was never entirely hers. And when her memories return, so does the man from the other life.
The premise is paranormal, but the emotional conflict is remarkably human. What happens when the past returns and reveals that a love was never imaginary in the first place?
And what happens to the people who were part of that past?
For me, this is one of the things that makes the trilogy stand out. Even with an extraordinary premise, the pain at its heart remains familiar. Three people, complicated feelings, and no easy way to make everything right.

He's Not the Man Who Lost

What I find particularly interesting about this man is that he has a life beyond the love triangle.
He comes from an aristocratic family. His relatives are involved in politics and business, but he chooses a different path, spending his life teaching and conducting research at a university.
He may seem innocent at first, but there's a rebellious streak beneath that appearance. He can also be selfish, especially early in the story. He's not a perfect romantic hero, and that's part of what makes him feel real.
After she disappears from his life, he spends much of his life studying the clues she left behind, trying to understand what she really was. His research eventually benefits ordinary people, too.
He doesn't simply remain the man who lost her. He has a career, makes his own choices, and builds a life of his own.
He eventually has a wife and two children. After his death, he becomes a beautiful family legend.
His story may not occupy a huge part of the trilogy, but it leaves an impression. He's not just a rejected second male lead whose purpose is to make the other man look better.
He's someone who was loved, lived a full life, and left something behind.

When the Two Rivals Get Drunk Together

Of course, that doesn't mean the two men like each other.

They dislike each other and compete for the same woman, but their rivalry doesn't turn into a deadly feud. In fact, they can unexpectedly find themselves in the same bar, drinking together and complaining about the woman who has threatened to break up with both of them.

And things get wonderfully ridiculous.

Drunk out of their minds, the two men turn up at her home in the early hours of the morning and proceed to throw up all over her living room, her bathroom, and even her pajamas.

It's hardly the sort of scene you'd expect from two romantic rivals.

But I love that they're allowed to be this ridiculous. They can resent each other without becoming sworn enemies who want to destroy one another. Their shared frustration doesn't erase their rivalry; it simply makes the whole situation hilariously human.

A love triangle doesn't always have to end in a battle between two men. Sometimes, they can just get drunk together and make a complete mess of everything.

One Last Joke

Perhaps my favorite detail comes when they meet again years later.

He knows there won't be another chance to see her. When she tells him that she'll visit his children after he's gone, he tells her not to.

Why?

Because his children are just like him in every way, and he can't bear the thought of one of them falling in love with her, too.

It's such a wonderfully funny response to an otherwise bittersweet moment.

Even after everything that has happened, he still has his sense of humor. He knows this may be their last meeting, yet he can still tease her about the absurdity of it all.

The more I think about him, the more I appreciate this man who was never simply the one who didn't get the girl.

He was someone else's great love, a husband and father, a scholar, and a man with a life of his own.

He doesn't need to win the love triangle to be worth remembering.

Discover The Shape of Us

The Shape of Us is a paranormal love-triangle romance trilogy comprising One False Life, Two of Us, and Three Is a Crowd.

If you enjoy love triangles that go beyond betrayal and rivalry, with complicated identities, unexpected connections, and characters whose stories don't end with a simple romantic choice, this trilogy might be worth exploring.

Sometimes, the most memorable man in a love triangle isn't necessarily the one who gets the girl.

Sometimes, he's the one you keep thinking about long after you've finished reading.
