He Says She’s Not His Type. Sure, Dylan.

There are some conversations between these two that make you want to stop reading and say:

Dylan. Seriously?

Here’s one of them.

H: What did you say?
Dylan: I was joking. Though I do usually mean it.
H: Don’t even think about it.
Dylan: Relax. You’re not my type. That skirt is hideous, by the way.
H: Keep your fashion opinions to yourself.

Dylan: There’s a phone in your room. You can call the police anytime.
H: You won’t cut the line, will you?
Dylan: Please. I’m not some creep. But if I were, you’d already be doomed. My castle, my rules.

First of all...

“You’re not my type.”

Sure.

Of course she isn't.

That's why you brought her home on the first night.

That's why you keep flirting with her.

That's why you seem to know exactly how she reacts to you.

And that's definitely why, when she's half-asleep in the passenger seat, you wake her up by casually mentioning that you used to carry sleeping women straight to bed.

Yes, Dylan. Very convincing.

He keeps forgetting that he's supposed to be a stranger.

This is actually one of my favorite things about Dylan in these early scenes.

H doesn't know him.

At least, she doesn't consciously know him.

But Dylan has known her for years.

He remembers the girl who appeared in his world when she was little. He remembers the teenager who left her name carved into his tree. He has watched her grow up through those strange encounters that were dreams to her and reality to him.

Now she's sitting beside him in the real world.

And he has to pretend they've just met.

The problem?
Dylan is very bad at pretending.

He remembers too much.

Sometimes he reacts before he remembers that he's supposed to be a stranger. Sometimes the old familiarity slips out. And then he has to cover it with a joke, a tease, or that irritatingly casual flirting of his.

For most of the night, H is trying to figure out whether she can trust this strange man.

Dylan, meanwhile, seems determined to flirt his way through the entire situation.

Very helpful.

And then there's the skirt.

I actually love this line:

“You’re not my type. That skirt is hideous, by the way.”

Because what exactly are you doing here, Dylan?

If the goal was simply to reassure her that you weren't interested, why insult her skirt?

You could have stopped at:

“You're not my type.”

But no.

Apparently the skirt had to die too.

And I think there is something underneath the teasing.

Maybe Dylan is reassuring her.

Maybe he's trying to make himself feel safer, too.

Because this woman is different.

He has had centuries to become very good at keeping relationships uncomplicated. He doesn't stay. He doesn't promise forever. He doesn't let things become too serious.

And then H walks into his life.

Except she isn't really walking into his life for the first time.

She's been there before.

For years.

Their connection has existed in this strange space between dream and reality long before either of them could name it.

And now that she is standing in front of him for real, I think Dylan may be discovering something he wasn't prepared for:

What if this isn't just another woman?

Maybe he's not only denying his feelings to her.

Maybe he's denying them to himself.

H isn't acting like herself either.

And this is where I think the two of them become really interesting.

H is normally cautious.

Her real life has taught her not to trust people easily. She's under pressure, she's constantly trying to keep her life together, and she doesn't exactly have a long history of throwing herself into romantic situations.

Her experience with men is limited.

Her instinct is to be careful.

Suspicious, even.

So no, she isn't casually following a handsome stranger home just because he's attractive and happens to help her.

She is suspicious almost the entire time.

Which is why the whole situation is so funny.

She gets taken to the police station.

Dylan becomes, at least officially, her temporary “guardian.”

She has a phone in her room.

She knows she can call the police.

And yet she's still watching him like:

I'm not sure about you.

Meanwhile, Dylan is probably thinking:

You really don't remember me, do you?

They are both a little ridiculous.

And I think that's the point.

Dylan isn't behaving like the man who has spent centuries walking away from relationships.

H isn't behaving like the careful woman who normally trusts no one.

Something about being together makes both of them slightly... not themselves.

Dylan keeps flirting when he should be keeping his distance.

H keeps questioning him while somehow continuing to stay close.

Neither of them understands what is happening yet.

This isn't how either of them normally behaves.

And sometimes that's exactly what falling in love looks like before anyone is willing to admit it.

This is the kind of chemistry I love in a romance.

Not instant declarations.

Not “I saw him and immediately knew he was the one.”

Just two people who are supposed to be strangers...

...acting like they have known each other forever.

And one of them actually has.
